The Association for Pet Obesity recently reported the sad results of its 4th annual National Pet Obesity Awareness Day Study – over 50% of cats in the United States are overweight or obese. There is no reason to think the situation is any different in Canada.
While ‘fat cats’ are viewed as happy and content in popular culture, the truth is that the cost of obesity is high. Many serious diseases are associated with overweight and obesity in cats, such as diabetes, lower urinary tract disease, arthritis and lameness, skin problems, cancer and a shortened life expectancy.
Designing a safe and effective weight loss plan for your cat requires medical knowledge and skill, so please consult your veterinarian for help.
