September is designated as Happy Cat Month and for good reason. Cats are Canada’s number one pet. Canadians own 8.5 million cats (compared with 6 million dogs) . About 38% of Canadian households have a cat and over 90% of us say they are members of our family. Unfortunately, while we love our cats, we don’t always make the best choices when it comes to their health care.
Canadian cat owners are much less likely than dog owners (46% versus 77%) to have taken their pet to the veterinarian within the past 12 months. More than 40% of our cats either haven’t been vaccinated in the last 4 years or were never vaccinated at all. And pet owners will spend twice as much on veterinary care for dogs as they will for cats. It’s time to celebrate the joys of cat ownership and promote promote better health care for cats. Have we seen your cat recently?
